The Time Traveler’s Wife

Have you read this book? It’s “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger. I finished it recently and enjoyed it. The blurb on the cover says it’s “a soaring celebration of the victory of love over time”. That’s a good short description. It’s a chronicle of a couple’s love against some very odd obstacles. Does love overcome all? Even for a man who time travels without any advance warning?

OK, it’s an unusual premise but it really works here. I recommend this book.

From Publisher’s Weekly:

This clever and inventive tale works on three levels: as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with “Chrono Displacement” disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up to him exclaiming that she’d known him all her life. He, however, had never seen her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly finds himself time travelling to Clare’s childhood and meeting her as a 6-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare’s points of view, and so does the narration.

Third Annual Swell Sister Art Show With Petra B

On December 11th, 2010 it’s the (third) annual Swell Sister Art Show and once again my wife, friend, and partner Petra B will have a piece or two in the exhibit, along with various types of art by other members of the Swell Sister Society art group. The free event is part of the city’s Second Saturday festivities and will be held at the Coffee Garden, 2904 Franklin Blvd in Sacramento, CA from 6 PM until 9 PM. Also featured: Little Treasures, affordable art for everyone, to benefit the Women’s Wisdom Project of the Sacramento Food Band and Family Services.

Happy 75th Birthday Woody Allen

I wished him a happy birthday before, but this one is the 75th and that’s a milestone. So, Happy Birthday, Woody. I love your movies!

Here’s what I wrote a couple years ago:

Woody is one of America’s greatest filmmakers and humorists. A short overview of his life and career is here on Wikipedia. But that does not do it justice. The man has been making very-good-to-outstanding films since the 60s and continues today. And that is not to even mention his books, plays, or even his clarinet playing. He is one of the truly great artists of our time and I honor him by wishing him a wonderful birthday.

And it still rings true. Back then, I listed my top 11 Woody Allen Films, in case you were wondering about that too 😉

Nowhere Boy

Recently I saw the movie “Nowhere Boy” (official web site). It’s about the early years of John Lennon, specifically the teen years. Yes, before the Beatles were even a real group. The movie delves into John’s relationship with his aunt Mimi (who raised him) and also his mother who left him when he was a child. His hurt, anger, and confusion are real and justifiable and the film doesn’t sugar-coat those qualities, but his charm and sense of humor shine through it all. Take a look at the trailer for the movie below:
I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a Beatles fan and maybe even if not. The critics at Rotten Tomatoes give it a very high rating. Have you seen it? What did you think?

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger

Recently I saw the latest Woody Allen film, You Will Meet A tall Dark Stranger. It’s a drama with a little humor here and there. As always with his films, the acting is top-notch, as are the actors. The writing is crisp and insightful and the direction is expert. The message is somewhat downbeat overall, which happens in many of his films. But then, life is not always happiness and sunshine either, is it? I found it very entertaining. Here’s the official trailer, take a look:

Woody explores the familiar theme of infidelity but also the ultimate question of whether happiness can last and is it even possible? And if it is, can we find it only if we leave reality behind? Heavy thoughts. It’s a very good film that should make you think but hopefully enjoy at the same time. Recommended, but remember it’s not a romantic comedy or a Bruce Willis action flick. Have You Read This Book – Take 12

I finished this book recently and really enjoyed it. The book is “Woody Allen on Woody Allen” and is subtitled “In Conversation with Stig Bjorkman”. It’s a thoughtful series of discussions between two very intelligent filmmakers about each of Woody’s movies (up through “Husbands and Wives”) in chronological order. There are no jokes, nothing personal, just a thorough, technical, insightful, and fascinating discussion of his films, and how and why they were made.

For a devoted fan, this book is a must. You will learn a lot about his creative process and the way he works with the other people in his films.

Fans of Woody Allen have long waited to hear him tell us in his own words about his life, his tastes, and his films, but until recently he has been reluctant to give lengthy interviews. This book is the conversation we’ve been waiting for, a dialogue with Stig Bjorkman in which Allen speaks openly about himself and his art. I love Stardust Memories too! If you are a big Woody fan like I am, you will probably enjoy this book.

Hello again, family, friends, and everyone else too. The pictures from our Seattle 2010 trip are now online! We had a great time as usual. There are Seattle pix, Bumbershoot Festival pix, and just some other weird pix we took on the trip.

Note: These photos came from three different cameras: a real digital camera and two different cell-phone cameras. So, they may not be exactly totally in order. Still fun though…

First off, no, the Seattle 2010 photos are not online yet. Soon! Remember patience is a virtue or something like that. Good things come to those who wait. Yada yada yada…

But a sharp-eyed reader of Stevenology notified me recently that about half of the links on the photos page were broken and she couldn’t see the pictures. She was heartbroken sad just notifying me.
