Terrific Tunes For Tuesday – Take 71

It’s not Tuesday? So what. It’s still a terrific tune by one of my favorite artists. He’s a fantastic songwriter and I love this song. There’s no real video, just a picture. But listen anyway!

Terrific Tunes For Tuesday – Take 70

It’s not Tuesday? So what. It’s still a terrific tune by one of my favorite bands and one of my favorite songs by them, Great music, great lyrics, great mood, great musicians. This song has it all.

John Lennon just wants the truth. It’s a new video for an old song, but just as timely today as when it was recorded in the seventies.

You probably remember “Cars”, Gary’s big hit from the seventies. It was a pretty cool song, unlike anything else at the time. That was then and this is now. Well, he’s been making music ever since then, of varying types and with little to no success or fame. But talent and quality once again win out in the end and his career is in a resurgence. And deservedly so. His last couple alums are super-strong and he sounds fresh even after all these years. Seriously, buy the latest album Savage (Songs From A Broken World). And the one before it Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind) is just as good if not even better. Wonderful, moody, atmospheric, gripping,  and powerful stuff…

Here’s the video for “My Name Is Ruin” off the latest album, a post-apoctalytic vision of the “broken world”. That’s his daughter in the video and backup vocals.

One of my favorite bands is XTC, as some of you know. They did a couple side projects back in the day, masquerading as the psychedelic band “The Dukes Of Stratosphear”. The alter-ego band was comprised of Sir John Johns, The Red Curtain, Lord Cornelious Plum, and E.I.E.I. Owen…

Here’s what Andy Partridge, leader of XTC, had to say about this tune, a sort-of homage to The Beatles “I Am The Walrus”:

We dressed up in the gear, and we had a dummy piano painted in psychedelic swirls, and just made every pop promotional film from 1967 all together in one film. Including this cod Pathe News voiceover at the start which said (plummy newsreel voice) “Here we see Chittingfold House, home of the Frobisher-Harrises since 1667. Some three hundred years later, the English pop group The Dukes of Stratosphear have decided to perform their latest pop recording, ‘The Mole From The Ministry’.” And then it went into this piece of cod. And we were so happy with it, cause it was the only video to that date where we’d had total input and we’d been listed to instead of, oh no, we’re gonna do it my way instead. Cause that always happened on our videos, we just had to shut up and do as we were told. But that one came out great. And then Virgin Records said no, we’re not going to spend any money on it. We said, look, it already exists! You just pay two thousand pounds to the BBC and you can buy it from them! And they wouldn’t do it. So there is a video in existence — it’s quite long, it’s about five minutes long. . .

It’s called “Is This Tainted Love?” This mash-up is the classic Soft Cell song mixed with some Bob Marley. No, really. Check it out. There’s not really a video but the mash-up is fun.

Yes, 2016 was a rough year. Bowie, Prince, Gene Wilder, and all the other deaths. Not to mention the massive challenge of life itself. Holy crap, I need some novocaine for my soul. Here’s Mark Everett, aka “E”, from the first Eels album. Still cool today, as far as I know… 😉

It’s been a while, but today’s Terrific Tune For Tuesday is Melanie Martinez video for “Pity Party”. Old-timers like me will recognize the piece of Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party”, but don’t worry, credit is given and Melanie takes it into a whole new area. Actually, I’d recommend the whole “Cry Baby” CD by Melanie, but here’s a bit of it. Enjoy this Pity Party.

It’s around Halloween time, so my thoughts turned to Oingo Boingo. Of course. Yours too, I presume. So here’s their classic song “Dead Man’s Party” with a bit of a different video. It’s made up of scenes from two Tim Burton movies that Boingo frontman Danny Elfman did the music for, The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride.

Enjoy!

I’m not a fan of most hip-hop or rap. Once in a while a track stands out, but a lot of it strikes me as very simple and repetitive music with lyrics that are often some guy bragging and boasting or else some guy demeaning and objectifying women. Lame music over a worse message.

But of course, there ARE always exceptions. One of which is the “virtual” group Gorillaz. They are not really hip-hop, only a handful of their songs come close, but when they are in that mode they mix it with a brit-pop and experimental sensibility. This is not surprising since they are the creation of Blur frontman Damon Albarn.  There’s rap in it, as well as a Blur/Kinks kind of British vocal and it’s just so darned catchy! Watch their first “hit” from around the year 2000, “Clint Eastwood”. They don’t sound like anyone else, and this is only one of the musical types that they do.

Anyway, check this out!

Many of you know that I am a big fan of the British group XTC. They made plenty of great music over the years, but they also had a side project, The Dukes Of Stratosphear. Pretending to be a psychedelic band from the sixties, they released an EP (“25 O’Clock”) and a full album (“Psonic Psunspot”) of great and clever psychedelic rock tunes. This song, “The Mole From The Ministry”, borrows heavily from The Beatles “I Am The Walrus” video (and music), which I also love. Some of their other tunes borrow lovingly from Pink Floyd, The Hollies, and other groups from back in the day. You can (and probably should) get both their records on one CD called “Chips From The Chocolate Fireball”.

Anyway, check this out!

This is fun, hope you agree. It mashes up the Beatles classic “Come Together” with the recent mega-hit by Lorde, “Royals”. I got a smile out of it, maybe you will too?

Terrific Tunes For Tuesday – Take 58

kate bushAlso known as “Happy Birthday, Kate Bush”…

Kate Bush (learn more) has been a huge musical talent for thirty-some years. She is eccentric, even weird at times, but totally original and one of a kind. Her last few albums have been a bit too much on the mellow side, but her first six or so albums are interesting, clever, arty, and highly recommended. Her voice may not be for everyone, and her songs may not be either. But give her a few listens with an open mind and you might just hear a unique talent.

Her eclectic musical style and idiosyncratic vocal style have made her one of the United Kingdom’s most successful solo female performers of the past 35 years. – from the Wikipedia article

Seriously, there is no one like her. Give her a chance and listen to something different and original.

Here’s the video for “Suspended In Gaffa”:
