Obama Bash and Bush Retirement Party

We had a double celebration last weekend. First, we have a wonderful new president, Barack Obama. Second, the previous president, George “Dubya” Bush (least popular since Nixon, btw) is finally leaving office! Either of those things would be reason for a party, but both? Be still my beating heart! Yes, yes, yes!

So, naturally, we invited 30 or so of our friends (and a few other people) and had a bash. There was food and drink, of course, but so much more. The guest of honor was Barack, as you can see in the party photos. And he was smiling the whole time so it must have been a good great party! We had it all: the worlds most difficult puzzle, pig stacking, a pool table, musical instruments, and of course the legendary Big Bowl of Bushisms, a bowl filled with hundreds of the dense and dumb things that former president Bush has said over the years. And he said enough dumb things to keep the party rolling for a long time. More about Bushisms here and here. But the best thing about the party was all the great people who attended. Thanks for coming, if you were here. If not, as Mr T used to say, “I pity the fool”. Hahaha! 😉

Now – check out the party photos, and you will see what a happening event it was. Click on any thumbnail photo to view a larger one. While viewing the larger ones, you can click on the right arrow in the upper right of the screen to go to the next one. Or there’s a slideshow option up there too. Ok, sure, some of the pix are a bit blurry, but then again some of the people were too. But it’s ok, we accept all people, be they blurry or crystal clear. Plus, you can get to those photos and many more on the photos page. But just don’t think you can find out any of the 48 solutions to the puzzle by looking at these photos. We’ve blocked out the solution, you’ll just have to work the puzzle for yourself. If you dare…

Were you there? Were you square? Did you love those photos? Why not leave me a comment?

A Day Of Service On MLK Day

President-elect Obama has asked us all to step up to the plate and do something to make this world a better place. He asked us that today, on the Martin Luther King holiday, that we volunteer to do something useful for our community and country. With a mild and appreciated nudge from my wife Petra, we volunteered to work the morning at raft, a local non-profit group that provides very low cost materials for teachers. Check out their web site here.

We helped cut stickers for material packs for teachers. A menial task, sure, but helpful to teachers. And teachers are one of the most useful and underappreciated groups in our country. We can only be great if our people make intelligent choices. The smarter our young people become, the better our country will become.

Another way to serve: Treat your fellow human beings with respect and caring. Make sure that everyone has equal rights and equal opportunity. We can only be a good as the way we treat our weakest and poorest. When you raise their level, everyone above it becomes better too. We are a country for ALL the people. As the richest country on earth we can and should include everyone.

Happy New Year!

OK, so I am almost a week late. We move at a relaxed pace out here on the left coast. But here’s wishing you all the the greatest new year ever possible. As for the past year, well, it’s over and we can say that for it at least. Bygones. There were a lot of highs (too many to recap) and a few lows (losing my mom for instance).

So, the holidays are over for better or for worse, and now on into the new year full speed ahead. Or at a nice, smooth pace. Whatever works for you. And on that note, here’s a video (below) that I have always liked about “A Long December”, by Counting Crows:

Peace to all in the new year.

A Benjamin Button Birthday And More

Brad Pitt. Cate Blanchett. Five Golden Globe nominations. So it must be good, right? Well, my birthday was a few days ago, and we went to see the movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Here’s the official site and here’s the Rotten Tomatoes page. I liked this movie. It wasn’t perfect but it moved along quickly considering the length, the story was engaging, and the performances were all good. Have you seen this movie? What did you think? I laughed and cried. Did you? Were you struck by lightning seven times?

Before the movie we had a great brunch at Todo Un Poco in nearby Laguna. It was soooo good. Of course Petra had the amazingly good Punjabi Pizza. I had some breakfast enchiladas. Then we both had leftover Punjabi the next day. How sweet is that?!?!!! If you have had it then you know what I am talking about.

After the movie we went to the Sacramento Kings basketball game. They stunk up the place, for sure, and lost by forty-five points. No, that is not a misprint. Enough said about that. P.U.

Ah, but after that it was dinner at 524 Mexican Food. Chili Rellenos. Enchiladas. Negra Modello. And of course Petra had her favorite Papas Tacos (potato tacos). Man, oh man, am I getting hungry! How about you?

Movie Time!

The holiday season and movies. Don’t those two things go together? We rented four movies and bought six more. Don’t panic! The ones we bought were only five dollars each!

Here’s what we rented and watched:

The Dark Knight – Yeah, the Batman movie with Heath Ledger as The Joker. Has any recent film had this much hype? Well, it was a well-financed effort with lots of flash, action, and special effects, as I expected. It was non-stop action and Heath did a creepily great job as The Joker. I liked the movie for the escapist fun that it was. Petra was less enthused. 😉

The Women – A chick flick. In fact, there were no men even in this movie! It was ok, but nothing special.

Smart People – I thought Ellen Page, Dennis Quaid, and the other stars would make this a smart movie, but it wasn’t as good as I thought hoped it might be. So-so, but it had it’s moments.

Little Miss Sunshine – We both enjoyed this one. It was very quirky and entertaining and the performances and writing were good. Plus, it wasn’t like every other movie. This one was fun.

And the ones we bought, real cheap like:

Grace Is Gone

Cassandra’s Dream

The Great Debaters

Mad Money

The Pursuit Of Happyness

Dreamgirls

Do you have any thoughts about any of these? Any complete turkeys? Are they all great? Leave a comment…

Petra B. Is An Artist!

Gather The WomenMy wife and partner, Petra B, will be one of the Swell Sister artists included in a Second Saturday art show, titled Gather The Women. This will be her first time to have a piece of art included in a public showing. Way to go, PB! Her piece is a work of fused glass and wire art, entitled “Five Women”.

As you can see from the postcard at right, the showing will be Saturday December 13th, 2008, at the Coffee Garden. This venue is located at 2904 Franklin Blvd in Sacramento, CA. Click on the postcard graphic to see a larger version. One of the pictures on the card is a glass bowl that Petra created a while back (see top row, fourth from right).

The reception for this event will start at 6:00 PM but you can drop by any time that evening to see the art. Food and coffee are available and there will be music by the Jahari Sai Trio. Bring your friends and come by the Coffee Garden on December 13th to see Petra‘s latest and greatest work of art “Five Women”. And check out the rest of the Sisters’ art too, of course!!

Happy Tofurky Day

Happy Tofurky Day!Yep, you read that right. We don’t eat no dead birds ’round these parts. We’ll have a vegetarian feast instead. And you can tell by looking at us that we are NOT starving. So, Happy Tofurkey Day to family and friends. And anyone else who has stumbled into this den of rogues, scoundrels, n’er-do-wells, and blackest of sheep.

Today’s culinary tip: What kind of wine should one enjoy with a fake “turkey”? Most experts, including myself, would suggest limiting it to either red, white or pink. Anything else would be a major faux pas.

Now, could you kindly please pass the Tofurky, the nut loaf, the potatoes, the stuffing, the corn, the soup, the bread, the gravy (of course), and both kinds of pie? You can keep the cranberry sauce ;-p

Barack Is In The House! Our House!

Barack The houseYeah, baby! It’s the President-Elect. And you all know what big Obama fans we are, having already read this and this. So, really, it’s no big surprise that he showed up at our house to thank us personally for voting for him. Hey, pictures don’t lie!

Possible captions for this photo:

Barack: “This is better than the White House”

Us: “No, you can’t give our dog to your kids!”

Us: “RED wine? That’s our favorite too!”

The dog: “Want to watch General Hospital?”

Me: “Too bad you didn’t know Petra before you picked your vice-president!”

Any other ideas? C’mon boys and girls. Just click on the comment link below…

New pix! Las Vegas/Grand Canyon Mini-Vacation

It was only four nights, two in Vegas and two cold nights at the Canyon. But we did a lot and we saw a lot. And now the photos are on the site! Check ’em out here and leave a comment if you want to. Some of the picture may be a little blurry or fuzzy but then so is life sometimes. Cellphones can take pictures, but can they take good pictures? Anyway, just take a look.

Of course, you can read about the trip too, part one is here and part two is here. Have fun!

Have You Read This Book?

The book is Clown Girl by Monica Drake. I saw Monica do a reading of a chapter a few years back at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle and was immediately taken by her clever and quirky prose. And after finally reading the whole book, I will say it was a very pleasant experience. This is a fast-paced, wild ride through the world of Baloneytown, with a suprising insightful clown as the main character.

Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, says “Clown Girl is more than a great book, Clown Girl is its own reality”. Would I go that far? Maybe so. I know this much: I liked the book. And it was indeed an outrageous world with unique characters in unique situations. But through it all you wanted to know what was going to happen next the Sniffles, the female protagonist.

Doctor, Doctor, Give Me The News

No, I don’t mean that old Robert Palmer song (or was it Moon Martin)? Anyway, long-time readers of this blog will remember on my old web site that I kept a running off-and-on commentary about my wife Petra‘s bout with breast cancer and her subsequent treatments and current period of remision.

It’s been a few years now, but today was her every-six-month check with her oncologist. And, guess what? NED! That’s right, no evidence of disease. Her blood work was clear and good, and the exam went fine too. Ya-hoo! So we are good to go until next May at least. That’s when the next appointment is. In case you were wondering. To health!

The Las Vegas/Grand Canyon Trip – Days 3-5

We (me, Petra, Larry, and Robin) got up the morning of October 12th and hit the road. Well, not literally. But we had a long 5-6 hour drive ahead to the Grand Canyon. Along the way we stopped in Williams on legendary Route 66 and had a picnic lunch. We stopped at a coffee shop there for some caffeinated refreshment. Then we continued our drive, heading toward a huge plume of ominous-looking dark smoke. Was the Grand Canyon on fire? Naaa, I didn’t think so. They were just doing a controlled burn nearby. Whew! So we finally arrived at the South Rim and before even checking into our rooms we had to stop and look at the view from Mather Point. Wow! That is one big hole in the ground! We walked around and admired the view for a bit then headed to check in.

It was a decent, clean room and we headed back to the nearby Canyon for sunset. We got there a little too late, so we decided to check that out tomorrow evening. So, instead, well, let’s eat! At one of the lodges they had a sort or food court with different types of food, most places with a vegetarian option or two. Fed and happy, we went to a different lodge nearby that had a big fireplace (remember, it got down to aout 20 degrees at night). We had a drink and sat a while near the fireplace, then we headed back to the rooms, visiting for a while first in our friends’ room. Then it was nighty nightime…

The Las Vegas/Grand Canyon Trip – Days 1-2

Petra Goes Gambling In Las VegasWhat happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But how interesting is that? Bah! So here are the facts about what happened in Las Vegas, more or less, pretty much, you know what I mean. And don’t panic, the Grand Canyon part of the trip will be in the next post. And pictures will be here one of these days too.

We flew Our plane flew out of Sacramento fairly early on the morning of the 10th. It was a short and uneventful flight. Our friends Larry and Robin picked us up at the airport. What were they doing there, you ask? Well, since you asked, they were driving a van across country for a relative and hooked up with us for the 4-5 days of this trip. Indoors (yes) In A Vegas CasinoAfter the warm and fuzzy “hi good to see you” part, we headed to the Original Pancake House (inside a casino of course) for a enormous hearty breakfast. Then after we gambled there for a little while, we headed to the Riviera Casino to pick up our tickets to tonight’s show. We’ll get to that in a few. But now it was time to check into the Worldmark, our hotel for the next two nights. It was a nice, roomy place with two bedrooms, two baths, and a kitchen. Of course by then we were hungry again. 😉

So we went to Komol Thai Restaurant, where we had gone on our previous Vegas trip. And it was good this time too. Then it was back to

The Making Of A Garden Stone

A few weeks ago I made a post about how we bought a very special brick for the grandkids. And that was very cool, check it out if you haven’t already. But this is a little different. It’s a garden stone for my mom. She is gone now, passed away this spring, but when she was here she touched a lot of lives and will not soon be forgotten.

My wife Petra B had this great idea. In my Mom’s honor, she suggested making a garden stone in her memory. You can see the final product in the picture on the right. Mom. 2008. Betty Jo.

Petra got the ball (the stone?) rolling and did most of the work including mixing the cement, but I helped some with the lettering and finishing work. The glass (yes, those are glass pieces) inset into the stone is her work, she is the artist. Thank you so much Petra B for the great idea.

We put the stone in our yard, next to some plants (mums, coincidentally) that my co-workers gave me around the time of the funeral.

Our Brick For The Grandkids

Our BrickHow do you like our brick? Sort of speaks for itself, don’t you think? We bought it for two reasons: 1) It is a great, semi-permanent way to show our grandkids that we love them and are thinking of them and 2) The money went to a very good cause, the local kids attraction Fairytale Town. We have taken the grandkids there numerous times and they always had a great time on the Crooked Mile, the slides, the rabbit hole, Sherwood Forest playgroud, seeing the animals, drinking out of the Hippo’s mouth, watering the garden, climbing on the train, and eveything else. Next time they go, they will be able to see their names on their brick and hopefully they will come back many times over the years to visit it and smile knowing that we love them.

The Yellow Brick RoadYou can see from the second picture what the completed portion of the Yellow Brick Road looks like. It is right outside the entrance to the theme park, across the street from the Sacramento Zoo. There are still bricks for sale if you are interested in helping this very worthy cause. You can get almost anything you want printed on a brick (within reason, of course). Why not stop by there and check out our brick! It’s fun to look for it and see all the others and what people put on theirs. Check it out, and let us know if you do!

Burn After Reading – The Movie

Burn After ReadingIf you have an open mind and enjoy some dark and quirky humor, then you will really like this movie. I really did! The performances are great all around, the script is wild and funny, the pace is quick with lots of twists, and I was laughing out loud and loving this film. Maybe it is not for everyone. But nothing is, right?

Here is the Rotten Tomatoes page, where it currently has a very good 78% rating. And here is the official web site, check it out. This Coen Brothers film is in a league with The Big Lebowski and Fargo, and that means it is really good. If you didn’t like those then you might not like this. But then what the $%^& is wrong with you? 😉  Ha, just kidding…

More info and lots of video trailers to watch are here on the IMDB site, another great movie site. I’m just saying’, go see it if you like something a little out of the ordinary. It was really good! Have you already seen it? Let me know what you thought, leave a comment.

Our Grandkids Are Not Running For President!

Some of you miss the old blogging style, where I told you in some detail about my boring yet fascinating life. We can look back and squeal with delight at Stevenology 1.0 and the diary that it sometimes was. Or not. But one thing that is missing was the personal information. Or, as many readers say, “Just what is Steven up to these days?”

So, lets get up to date about the grandkids, Josephine, Jasmine, and Raziel. As you know,
