Last semester I attended a 13 week, two hours per week, seminar called “Rock, Pop, and Soul Music 1964-1969”. Yes, really. It was a blast and one of the high points of each week.
Well, it’s time for the new semester to start this week and I’ll be taking another music-related seminar.
This one is called “The Beatles Jukebox” and here’s the description:
Feb. 9, 1964, The Ed Sullivan Show: The opening act was a quartet from Liverpool singing All My Loving. It was one of those life-changing moments that forever changed the look and sound of contemporary music. What we saw that night was the culmination of five years of The Beatles playing cover versions of songs by their favorite artists. This seminar will explore those songs and artists and compare the original with the cover: Anna by Arthur Alexander, Boys by The Shirelles and Rock ‘n’ Roll Music. We will delve into the treatment The Beatles gave these tunes in order to fit their repertoire.
I’m a huge Beatles fan, as you may know, and typically play more of the later Beatles, but their early work was ground-breaking too for it’s time, and they did have a way with a cover song. So this should be interesting. The deeper you get into the Beatles the better it gets.
Class starts Friday, anticipation started quite a while back!
