More medical appointments. Sheesh. As if Monday wasn't difficult enough.

At times like this it is nice to have our friends. We had a nice dinner with Karl and Betty at El Novillerro. Good food, margaritas, and supportive friends.
We also spent some time at the Home and Landscape Show. And before that we had a really good breakfast at a new place iin mid-town called Crepeville. Lots of vegetarian choices and a nice new discovery.

The old cliche is that life goes on. And, apparently, it does, since I am writing this now and not last week. Petra's situation has thrown us both for a loop. Obviously more for her but this thing turns your life upside down. You can read more on her web site if you want to.
Petra has been waiting for the film Million Dollar Baby to open up here in Sacramento. Well, today was the day so we went to the first showing at our local neighborhood multiplex. It was a well-done and well-acted film. Some of it was pretty depressing and sad, though. I won't go into it. Would I recommend this movie? I don't know, it would depend on the viewer. I'm glad I saw it but I don't plan to see it again.

Wife and life partner Petra (web site) was diagnosed with breast cancer. I don't feel much like writing right now.

Went to see the film Sideways (again). I had already seen it but Petra wanted to see it too. No problem, since I really liked it both times. This film just won the Golden Globe award for best comedy and I would have to agree that it is a great comedy. Keep in mind, though, that it helps to be open-minded and that it is about grown-ups, not doofus stoner sex-crazed teenagers. Rated R, leave the kids at home but highly recommended.

In a training class all week at work. A nice break and actually a good class. Tonight we had dinner at Strings with Karl and Betty (friends), always a pleasant experience.

Basketball sadness. The Sacramento Kings traded Doug Christie. What a mistake. He was their best defensive player and also great with steals and assists. Plus, he was at least part of the heart of the team. Sigh. Of all the Kings players, he would be the last person I would trade. The team has so little defense and now they have given that away. He is perhaps the ONLY player on the Kings (formerly) that gave at least 100% whenever he played.

Boyz nite. Yo, hanging wit my homies. Ha! Karl, Larry, and I (friends) had a nice evening out. Glad both of them could make it. First we had some dinner at Ernesto's, a good Mexican restaurant in the midtown area. They have vegetarian choices and some killer pitchers of margaritas. Click here to contact me if you want to buy me a pitcher!
After that we went to a movie and saw Meet The Fockers. I would give it maybe two or two and a half stars out of a possible four. At most. Let me say that my opinion of the first movie in the series, Meet The Parents, was that it had a few funny moments but often went for too-easy sophmoric laughs and had long parts with little or no laughs. There wasn't much clever, witty, and really funny about most of it. And that applies to this latest film too. A few laughs, some groans, and a lot of waiting for something funny. The filmmakers seem to think that just seeing a famous actor trying to do comedy is enough. But I want some clever writing and, please, give me credit for some intelligence. A dog that humps everything isn't that funny even the first time. And I like DeNiro as much as the next person but give him some clever lines at least! Anyway, the movie is over-rated. It has a few funny moments but I didn't feel like it was worth the $9.25 I paid for it. Not a waste of time but certainly could have been a lot better.
I do like Fridays OK though.

Wal-Mart breaks laws, sells illegal guns, then settles with state. See the bad stuff the did and what our good Attorney General did about it here. They were very very bad:
- Selling and delivering firearms to 23 individuals the Attorney Generals Office had informed the store were prohibited from possessing firearms,
- Delivering firearms to 36 persons prohibited from possessing a firearm by means of a straw purchase to a relative or friend,
- Delivering firearms to persons prior to the completion of a criminal background check,
- Failing to verify the identity of purchasers through thumbprints and by scanning drivers licenses, and
- Failing to document that a firearm safety device, such as a trigger lock, was delivered with each firearm.
Tuesdays are usually better than Mondays.
Met with a trainer today to get more info and some knowledge about the machines at the gym and which ones to use and how. We'll see what happens.

"I don't like Mondays" - teen Brenda Spencer right before she shot up her school years ago.
OK, so that's a bit drastic. I don't like 'em but I still went back to work today. Wasn't so bad, except for the getting up early part. I hate that!! And in case you have any morbid curiousity, here's her actual quote: "I just started shooting, that's it. I just did it for the fun of it. I just don't like Mondays....I just did it because it's a way to cheer the day up. Nobody likes Mondays." Brenda managed to kill the Principal and school caretaker, also injuring nine kids, aged between 6 and 12. Once tired of the game, Brenda went home and waited for the police. For two hours Brenda spoke to the press and police negotiators before finally giving herself up, and for her it had all been worth it, for she had, at last, gotten her 15 minutes of fame. She was convicted on two counts of murder and is currently serving two 25 to life sentences. See, this not liking Mondays can be taken a little too far...
But, anyhow, the whole thing was the reason behind the Boomtown Rats great song "I Don't Like Mondays". A pretty good but nearly forgotten band led by Sir Bob Geldof of Live Aid fame. Worth a listen.

Happy New Year!!!
Here's wishing the best to each and every one of you. Well, most of you. George W, if you are reading this then I do NOT wish you a happy new year. Still wondering how you can sleep at night after sending all those men and women to be killed and wounded... I had to start the new year that way. Silence equals acceptance.
But some things are beyond my control. Not this though: We went to see Brian, son of Larry and Robin (friends) and his band The Evening Episode play at the Capital Garage. They were great. They use a lot of electronics and it's not your everyday rock band. But the music is clever, interestiing, and innovative and the musicians are all very good. Check them out if you have an open mind, and notice that their singer is really exceptional. Recommended. Go Brian!
BTW, I had to show my ID to get into the club. That doesn't happen every day.
